“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses” – Acts 13:38-39
LIGHT FOR NOW: Forgiveness of sins is in Christ.
From our opening text today, it is important to note firstly that it was Paul who gave this sermon in Acts 13. When Paul talked about the forgiveness of sins in verse 38, the preaching of it was inferred in the same verse; implying that the forgiveness of sins is preached. It is a message that ought to be preached.
Faith in this message equals forgiveness of sins. Hence, Paul’s words in verse 39 of the same Acts 3 “And by him all that believe are justified…” The ‘him’ referred to here is Christ. So, forgiveness of sins is in Christ. Justification is in Christ. The message of forgiveness of sins is the message of Christ; therefore, forgiveness is a preaching. Jesus himself echoed same in Luke’s synoptic account, “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47).
Note, the word ‘and’ used between repentance and remission is not conjunctive but explanatory. It is gotten from the Greek word, ‘Kai’ and in this context, it implies that is or which is. Jesus is saying, “And that repentance which is the remission of sins should be preached”. It is clear from Jesus’ words that the remission or forgiveness of sins is a preaching.
Forgiveness of sins fundamentally is the message of the gospel. Forgiveness therefore is not received because a man asked for it; rather forgiveness is received by faith in Christ. Forgiveness of sins is not a prayer; it is a message – the gospel of Christ. A man’s sin is not forgiven because he asked for it in the place of prayers but only by his faith in what Jesus did. Forgiveness thus is what Jesus accomplished in his death, burial and resurrection. Forgiveness is not what you did, it is what Jesus did. What Jesus did is automatically accredited to your account by faith in what he did. You are forgiven not because you continually prayed for your sins to be forgiven but because you have believed in the gospel of Christ.
INSTRUCTION: Forgiveness is not what you did; it is what Jesus did for you.
PRAYER: Father, I thank you for your death, burial and resurrection which has made forgiveness and eternal remission of sins available to me. Amen.
QUOTE: Forgiveness is not prayed, forgiveness is preached.
