“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures” – James 1:17-18
LIGHT FOR NOW: God is your father.
As believers, reading verse 17 alone without reading verse 18 can lead tomisinterpretations. When James said ‘Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…”, he was not referring to anything material. The good and perfect thing in this text is not a car, neither is it money nor houses nor possessions. That is why Bible is a contextual material and failure to read it in context will be a breeding ground for errors. The question that comes to fore is: what is the good and perfect thing brother James was talking about? The good and perfect thing is explained in verse 18 “…of his own will he begat us…”. The born again man is the good and perfect will of God. Thus, the good and perfect will of God here in the context of James’ explanation is the believer; the man born of God. In verse 17, James used the phrase ‘father of lights’ for God and referred to the believer who is a new creature as the son of God. In essence, James explained that the new creature is begotten of God by the word of truth, and this creation is perfect. Whilst in verse 18, he now says ‘he begat us’. That is God gave birth to us. By saying that he (God) begat us, it means that God is our father and we are His children.
We are his children by birth because he gave birth to us. Meaning, you are a child of God by birth and you are a son of God by inheritance. The believer is born of God and therefore has the legal right to call God father. He is our father and we are his children. Apostle Paul in the book of Romans lays credence to this: “For ye have not received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, father” (Romans 8:15). It takes a son to call God father. We call him father because we are his sons. Meaning God only fathers the one he gave birth to which is the believer. God is God to all, but he is only father to those he begat.
INSTRUCTION: You are of God; He gave birth to you. Therefore, walk as one who knows who he is.
PRAYER: Father I thank you for making me a son and giving me the boldness to call you Father, in Jesus Name. Amen.
QUOTE: You are a living expression of God.
