THE GOSPEL IN THE EPISTLES

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God – 1 Corinthians 1:17-18

LIGHT FOR NOW: The Gospel is about Christ and nothing more.

The gospel is a message that is preached about Christ. It is not about acts of charity like giving of food and clothes to the poor and needy nor is it about organizing comedy concerts in churches. Any church that focuses on comedy concerts is a clear indication that such a group has lost the joy of salvation. The gospel is not a motivational speech. When the gospel of Christ is preached, life must be given to men. Eternal life is only found in the gospel. The Gospel is about Christ and nothing more. Therefore, the focus of the message of every preacher must be Christ. The Bible is not to be used to teach business principles. The Bible is Jesus’ book. Jesus is the focus of the entire Bible. A believer grows only by the knowledge of Christ which is the Word of God. When you have the right knowledge about Christ, the way you see God, yourself and life in general will change. Apostle Paul mentions the word, ‘gospel’ about seventy three (73) times in the Epistles. This shows that the Gospel is more emphatic in the Epistles than in the synoptic or the Four Gospel. Speaking in 1 Corinthians chapter 15 from verse 1-4, he says, “MOREOVER, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures”. Here, Apostle Paul was so emphatic about the resurrection of Christ which is the root of the gospel.

In 2 Corinthians chapter 2 verse 12, Apostle Paul says, “Furthermore, when I came unto Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord”. The door opened by the gospel of Christ was to have more access to win more souls for Christ. You cannot hear the gospel of Christ, and the love of God does not flow through you. In summary, Apostle Paul emphasizes that the gospel of Christ is a message that is preached about Christ alone. This means that the gospel is specific about the person of Christ and not on things.

INSTRUCTION: Do not lose focus of the message of Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, I receive all that the gospel has wrought for me, in Jesus Name.  Amen.

QUOTE: The Gospel is what dispels spells.
