“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” –Romans 6:23
LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s eternal plan for man is eternal life.
Our text today tells us that, while the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life. This is to say that, the desire of God is to give eternal life to all men. Adam rejected the tree of life in the Garden of Eden which was God’s original plan for him to have eternal life; and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that brought sin and death to mankind. Adam disobeyed God and ate of the forbidden tree, which was sin. And by this singular act, all men became condemned to sin. Romans 5: 14 says, “Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come”. There is need to know that the gift of eternal life has been the plan and promise of God for man ever since before the world began. The Bible in Titus 1:2 says, “in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began”. God’s plan has always been to give man eternal life, because God Himself is eternal.
Sin and death was a disruption or distraction to man on his process of receiving the gift of eternal life from God, which God promised and made available in Christ Jesus before the world began. Eternal life is not an afterthought. It is God’s original plan. Eternal life is the life of God Himself called the ‘Zoe’. The coming of sin into the world was to corrupt the human race so as to hinder God from dwelling inside a man and operating on earth from inside of man. Since God cannot lie, He had to fulfill his promise by coming in the person of Jesus Christ, to first of all destroy sin and shed his blood to cleanse man and make him worthy to receive the eternal life which is the Spirit of God. The Law that was given by Moses could not control the excesses of man and make man worthy of God’s dwelling. Rather, it worsened the situation and amplified sin the more. The Law became a fault finder and judged all men guilty of sin before God. The giving of Christ on the Cross brought eternal life to man. Romans 8:3 says, “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh”.
