Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High priest of our profession, Christ Jesus’.
LIGHT FOR NOW: Believers are partakers of the heavenly calling of Christ!
The word ‘consider’, in the text means ‘think’. The writer of the book of Hebrews draws the audiences’ attention to Jesus Christ and implores them to think of Him as not only their Apostle but most importantly their High Priest. The writer calls the brothers partaker of Christ’s calling. This implies that believers are partakers of the heavenly calling of Jesus Christ!
To partake means to take part say in an activity; to participate; to have a share in something. It also means to have something of the properties, character, or office (of). In the context of our study, as a partaker, a believer has a part in whatever and whoever Jesus Christ is. A believer is a sharer in whatever Jesus Christ stands for. This way, all believers have a part in the calling of Jesus Christ.
You may rightly ask ‘What then is the Calling of Jesus Christ in which believers are partakers? The scripture refers to Jesus Christ as one called by God to be the High Priest. We read in Hebrews 5:10 ‘Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec’. Jesus Christ is the High Priest under the order of Melchisedec. This is the call of Jesus Christ and all who believe in Him are part of that priesthood! You have a duty to serve as a Priest. Christian maturity is not in the number of years expended in the Christian-fold, but in the knowledge of Christ.
It may interest you to know that it is expected of you to be the High Priest of the New Testament just as Jesus Christ is! Yes, you are a partaker in His Calling. Therefore, take responsibility as a Priest – stand in the gap for others. Take the message of Christ to the unbelievers! This is your calling!
INSTRUCTION: You have a duty to serve as a Priest
Prayer:I am a partaker of the Calling of Jesus Christ, Amen!
QUOTE:Christian Maturity is not in how long you have been a member of a congregation; it is seen in your depth of knowledge of Christ.
