“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and ye shall keep my judgments and do them… I will also save you from all uncleanness and I will call for the corn, and will increase it and lay no famine upon you” Ezekiel 36:25-27 & 29.
LIGHT FOR NOW: We have been completely cleansed.
In our analysis in the course of our studies on forgiveness in the light of the new birth, we have come to deduce the fact that the prophecy of Ezekiel in the above text was promissory; in that it was an utterance to be fulfilled in Christ which will automatically become the reality of the man in Christ by faith in Christ. Thus, the man in Christ is the new man being implied in Ezekiel’s prophecy; this man has been cleansed from filthiness or he has been separated from filth which is sin; this man has been indwelt by God’s spirit; and this man has received the gift of eternal life. Having examined the fact that the man in Christ is a new man; he has been indwelt by God’s spirit and he has the gift of eternal life. Let’s backtrack to Ezekiel’s prophecy and examine the fact that this man has been separated or cleansed from filth. Recall, the focus of this prophecy is to give a new/fresh life to the recipient; meaning that the cleansing will be to the end that the recipient will become a new man. Thus, cleansing from filthiness in the above prophecy, that is forgiveness or separated from filth will be by making the recipient a new being by giving a new spirit. Jesus in John 3 explained that the agency of this cleansing is the spirit.
Let us view the epistles as it will bring Ezekiel’s prophecy to the spotlight; “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God” (1Corinthians 6:11). Let’s observe Paul’s words in the above text in two other translations for elucidation. “There was a time when some of you were just like that, but now your sins have been washed away, and you have been set apart for God. You have been made right with God because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the spirit of our God have done for you” (1Corinthians 6:11 NLT). “And such, some of you were one. But you were washed clean (purified by a complete atonement for sin), and you were consecrated (set apart, hallowed), and you were justified (pronounced righteous by trusting) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Holy spirit of our God” (1Corinthians 6:11 AMP). So, we have been washed clean; in other words, we have been cleansed. In the proceeding day, we will examine what Paul meant in this text. Glory!!!
