“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and ye shall keep my judgments and do them… I will also save you from all uncleanness and I will call for the corn, and will increase it and lay no famine upon you” Ezekiel 36:25-27 & 29.
LIGHT FOR NOW: We are the father’s eternal abode.
In our last study on this subject, we saw that the promise of the indwelling of the spirit as inferred in Ezekiel’s prophecy is what Paul in the book of Romans 8 explains as the adoption of sons. And we saw that in context of Romans 8, Paul establishes the fact that the believer in Christ is indwelt by the spirit of God by nature by his use of the term “in the spirit or of the spirit”. This explains why Paul consistently refers to believers as the temple of God as we saw in our previous study. Thus, it is very clear as explained in the course of our studies that Ezekiel’s prophecy about the indwelling of the spirit (which was a promise to be fulfilled in Christ) is what the believer has today as his reality because what was to be fulfilled has been fulfilled in that Jesus has risen from the dead and his exalted at the right hand of the father. Thus, the promise fulfilled can never be undone or nullified or cancelled.
Can an eternal God promise a temporal indwelling of the spirit? How can an eternal God promise a temporary indwelling of the spirit? Ezekiel’s prophecy did not say “I will send my spirit into you and later take him out of you”, neither did he say “I will temporarily put my spirit within you”. Some people don’t even believe the fact that the spirit of God lives, dwells or abides in them; I don’t know which bible they read, because if they actually have carefully read the bible, they should not have a problem with this fact; instead of them having a problem with this fact, they should have appraised this fact as their realities revealed in the scriptures. Ezekiel said in his prophecy, “I will put my spirit within you”; “within you” means in you and the epistles as we have seen in the course of this study lets us see that the indwelling of the spirit is in us. Therefore, the fact that the spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) dwells in us should not be a problem, it should be a reality to be appraised by us; it is a good news we should be all happy and joyous about. This is why the gospel is called good news; it is what God has done in Christ which can never be undone once it is received. Rejoice! Hallelujah!
