“Giving thanks unto the father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. Who had delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear son” – Colossians 1:12-14
LIGHT FOR NOW: Born again is deliverance. You do not get born again and look for deliverance.
It is vital to note that some of the practices going on in the church today are as a result of lack of understanding of scriptural text. It is a lack of understanding that makes some folks think that the believer (the man in Christ, the man indwelt by the spirit; the man who is in the abode of God, the temple and dwelling place of God) needs deliverance. This is because they do not even understand what the word deliverance means. Now, notice, Paul has in context of Colossians 1:12-14 explained deliverance as the forgiveness of sins. The word, ‘forgiveness’ was translated from the Greek ‘aphesis’; it implies a release from bondage of wrong (iniquity). This deliverance is preached. It happens by believing that Jesus Christ died for sins. The words of Jesus in Luke 4:18-19 brings clarity to this fact; “the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sights to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to declare the acceptable year of the Lord”. Jesus in the above text read from Isaiah 61:1-2 as this was where it was spoken of prophetically by the prophet Isaiah.
Let’s examine Isaiah’s word ‘The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of prison to them that are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn” (Isaiah 61:1-2). Now observe in Luke’s account that Jesus’ flow of thought was on preaching. This shows us why between verse 18 and 19, the word, ‘preach’ was used three times. The word, ‘preach’ implies to announce or proclaim the good news. It infers to herald (as a public crier), to proclaim; to publish. This shows us that the emphasis on deliverance as used by Jesus was on preaching. Deliverance therefore is a message; it is the message or the goodnews of the gospel itself. Meaning the preaching of that message (the gospel) is the preaching of deliverance. And when this message is believed, the man who believed that message is delivered. That is, his sins are forgiven. This is because deliverance is the forgiveness of sins.
INSTRUCTION: You don’t need deliverance. You have been delivered when you believed.
PRAYER: Thank you, Lord, for the forgiveness of sins which I have as a possession in Christ Jesus. Thank you for taking up territory/ residence in me, in Jesus Name. Amen.
