“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jews first, and also to the Greek” Romans 1:16.
LIGHT FOR NOW: The Gospel is the Power of God.
The gospel (which means good news) has with it the inherent power of God which is regulated to save; meaning God’s power is seen in salvation. The good news (the gospel) in itself saves. An understanding of the facts of the gospel unveils the heart of a loving God to us. The gospel is the message of the love of God. Hence, the love of God is the reason for the gospel we preach. If you take the love of God outside of the gospel, then there is no more gospel to preach. The gospel itself is the love of God communicated to man; when the gospel is preached, the sinner man sees the love of God, the sinner man does not see his sinful act. The gospel shows us in detail how much mercy and grace the sinner man was given. It is important to note that the events of the cross are pointers and not final in the acts of God’s saving power. In Luke 24:25-27, it is clear in Jesus’ words that he must suffer and afterwards enter into his glory (as contained in the utterances of the prophets). 1Peter 1:10-11 buttresses this fact, it reads “Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what or what manner of time the spirit of Christ which was in them did signify when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow”. This means that an important fact in the gospel of Christ is the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow.
Firstly, Christ must suffer, the glory that will follow will be after his suffering; he suffered for three days and three nights. He hung on the cross for some hours but he was dead for three days. Paul’s words in 1Corinthians 15:1-4 bring more elucidation about the facts of the gospel. From this text, Paul states that Christ died, he was buried and he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. Hence, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus are the essential facts of the gospel of Christ. When these facts (the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ) are not understood, then the gospel itself is not understood. This is because these three (3) events are the essential facts that make the gospel the gospel; this means that these facts are the essential ingredients contained in the gospel of Christ. The event of the death, the burial and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is God’s power to save; meaning that when these three facts are absent in a preacher’s message, then God’s power to save will be definitely absent. The sinner man in hearing the gospel of Christ (the message of the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ) experiences God’s saving power. Hence, God’s saving power is not outside of Christ, God’s saving power is in Christ. Therefore, if the message of the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ is absent in any message, God’s power to save (salvation) is absent; meaning that if you remove the facts of the gospel, then you have denied the gospel its power.
INSTRUCTION: Stay within the facts of the gospel.
PRAYER: Father, thank you for the gospel of Christ which has unveiled to me the heart of a loving God and Father. I stay with the message, I stay with the facts and I am not moved away, in Jesus Name. Amen
