LIGHT FOR NOW: You are not known until Jesus is known.
We have come to deduce three very vital facts from our examination of Matthew 16:13-18 which are:
• The revelation of Jesus demystifies God.
• The revelation of Jesus unveils the believer.
• The revelation of Jesus exposes Satan
So where the believers’ identity is concerned, how will it be known? By revelation. The next question is, by the revelation of who? By the revelation of Christ. The next question is, by the revelation of who? By the revelation of Christ. The next question is, where can we find the revelation of Christ? In the scriptures. The identity of the believer will not be subjected to public opinion or human views; it will be subjected to the written word. So the born again man is not known from human perception but by revelation, just like Jesus was known by revelation and not by human perception. Finally in the line of this, let’s hear Paul as he echoes same truth; “Wherefore henceforth know we know man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2Corinthians 5:16-17). Where do we know Christ after the flesh? In the four gospels, and Matthew 16:13-18 is a perfect example of this. So Paul says we should not know Jesus after the flesh (2Corinthians 5:16). And in verse 17, he speaks of “man in Christ” (that is, a humanity of men; male and female) who is new creatures.
So, “man in Christ” (male and female) are not known after the flesh because the person in whom they are in or the person who is the head of this humanity is not known after the flesh. So both Christ and the new creature are a revelation; Jesus revealed is the believer unveiled. Outside Jesus, a believer can never know his true identity. With this fundamental analysis done so far, we will in our subsequent studies get back to our key text and unveil a fact that is the believers’ nature and go as far as we can in this study.
