LIGHT FOR NOW: The person of Jesus is the reason for the scriptures.
Having seen the word “rhema” used twice in 1Peter 1:25 which refers to the utterances of the prophets in the Holy Scriptures (Genesis to Malachi), we began investigating into the word “logos” used in verse 23 of 1Peter 1. Observe again how the word was used in John’s synoptic; it reads “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (John 1:1-4). Again, observe he uses the word “logos” thrice in verse 1, and in verse 3 and 4, he replaces the word “logos” with the preposition by him denoting that the word “logos” is a person.
Recall, the word “logos” implies the intent, idea, plan, reason, concept, message or a subject matter. We said that one vital reason Jesus is called the “logos” is because we explain God perfectly through him. In other words, having known the meaning of the word “logos”, we can thus deduce that Jesus is the intent of God, he is God’s idea, he is God’s plan, purpose, message; he is the subject matter and the reasoning capacity of God. Recall, in the “rhema” (utterances of the prophets), the word that came from God were their Christ centered utterance because Jesus is God’s “logos”.
In other words, in the “rhema” of the prophets, the “logos” is the focus or the “logos” in their “rhema” was what made their “rhema” to be called the word of the Lord. In essence, Jesus is the reason for their utterances; Jesus is the reason for their writings. Little wonder Apostle Peter echoed earlier in verse 10 and 11 of his first epistle which reads “Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow”. Where do we find the utterances of the prophets concerning the suffering of Christ and the glory that should follow? In the Old Testament books (Genesis to Malachi).
So, when I turn to the Old Testament books, have I turned to God’s word? Yes. Why? This is because in there, I will find the utterances of the prophets concerning Christ who is the logic of the scriptures. But is everything written in there (Genesis to Malachi) God’s word or words that came from God? No, because words that came from God in the Old Testament are words the prophet spoke concerning Christ; and in the Old Testament, God spoke, Satan spoke, donkey spoke; men who in their attempt to know God spoke words which mutilated God’s character. So, within God’s written word (the bible), they are words written that was not from God. So how will I know words that came from God while studying God’s written word? I will look at Jesus who is the living word and I will be able to know what is of God and what is not of God in the written word. Glory!
