“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” – Isaiah 53:3-7
LIGHT FOR NOW: The person of Jesus is the light that shineth in darkness.
In a bid to unbundle the entire words of Moses in Genesis 1:1-3, we’ve come to discover John’s explanation of this in John 1:1-5. Recall, John said the word who is the life and the light is the light of men which is salvation. And he further explains this as the light shining in darkness which darkness could not comprehend. So obviously, John in verse 4 and 5 was discussing salvation; Jesus the light of men; Jesus shines in darkness (men without the light) and their state could not withstand that light which means that light changed their status from darkness to light. So, darkness here (John 1:5) was figurative of men; that is, men in sin and that is the pretext (verse 4) already told you that the life was the light of men. So, verse 4 and 5 of John 1 is salvation. In other words, men’s status could not withstand the arrival of light in their heart; meaning, the arrival of Christ in the heart of a man changes his status from darkness (sin or man in the state of sin) to light (where we have salvation). So, notice two important things in John’s analysis:
- The life (who is the word, that is, Christ Jesus) is the light of men and this light shines in darkness and the darkness could not withstand it.
- In the light we will find life.
Recall, Jesus in John 8:12 said anyone who follows him (which means to believe) will have the light of life. Meaning from John 8:12, it could be deduced that life is in the light and in the first chapter of John’s synoptic, the same fact is echoed, “In him was life…” So, in Genesis 1:3 where we have “Light be”, it could be deduced that life is in that light and that is why eternal life is in salvation, just like spiritual death is in sin (darkness figuratively). So, when a man receives Christ, he is moved from darkness (sin) where we have spiritual death into light where we have eternal life which is salvation.
INSTRUCTION: You have been moved from darkness into light, from the power of Satan into God; acknowledge this.
PRAYER: Thank you dear Lord for translating me into the kingdom of your dear son wherein I am of the light and I walk in the light, in Jesus Name, Amen.
