“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men; for kings and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” – 1Timothy 2:1-2
LIGHT FOR NOW: Another integral people to be prayed for are kings and those in authority.
The word kings refer to presidents, governors, while the phrase “all in authority” refers to those who are in leadership position in our nation. In praying for our nation, scripture teaches us to pray for those in authority. We are to pray that they lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty, the question would be what does this mean? 1Timothy 2:3-4 “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our saviour, who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth”. The reason for the prayer of those in authority is for their salvation because God’s desire is for all men to be saved. 2Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance”.
This is God’s will, for all men to be saved. These men include our state governors and presidents. John 19:38-39 “And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight”. Both men were leaders in the society. Acts 10:1 “There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band”. Acts 10:45 “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost”. Cornelius was also a military leader who received the gospel. So we pray for this; men in power and authority ought also to be saved. Glory!
