“And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” – Luke 6:12
LIGHT FOR NOW: In Jesus we see our example of prayers because he is our model and we should follow after him.
It is important in our study of prayer that we look at Jesus, our father, Lord and master with regards to this study. Did Jesus pray? And how often did he pray? Was prayer a major part of his life here on earth? The obvious answer to this above question is yes! Prayer was a longer part of Jesus’ life. Jesus was a man of prayer; he was a man given to prayer. Jesus will thus stand out to be our model for prayers. Observe Luke 6:12 closely “And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). Jesus on his own went into a mountain to pray. In other words, he was consecrated to prayer. Prayer was his consecration. Luke 6:12 made it clear that he did that, that is, prayed all night. In other words, Jesus personally had a night vigil praying. You can imagine the hours he spent all night in prayers. This shows already that prayer is something much more than asking God to meet your desires, needs or solve your problems. Prayer is a fellowship; prayer is communion with God. Prayer is you conversing with God. Jesus spent all night praying. And if you study the earthly ministry of Jesus, you will discover that he was so consistent with his prayer life. Prayer was the lifestyle of Jesus.
Prayer thus ought to be the lifestyle of a believer because he is to model Jesus. If Jesus could spend all night praying, a believer can thus have a personal life vigil where he prays. This is an exercise of the spirit. Observe something crucial as we read Luke 22:44-46 “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as though it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation”. Jesus prayed till his sweat became blood? What a heartfelt earnest prayer. Jesus prayed earnestly. So, in Jesus we see our example of prayers. Glory!
