GOD’S SPIRIT DWELLS IN YOU (11)

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” – Romans 8:9-16

LIGHT FOR NOW: The indwelling of the spirit is the eternal reality of the born again man.

We began investigating into the promise of the spirit in the four gospels, and it was clear that in this regard, the synoptic of John has the most of details. In John 14, there is a further explanation of the promise of the spirit. John 14:16-17 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you”. Observe how Jesus explained the gift (giving) of the spirit. He had been explaining the union with the father, and how he was going to the Father to prepare a place for us (John 14:1-3); this he explained by the indwelling of the spirit or the giving of the spirit of truth (verse 16) and how by the fulfillment of this, he and the father would be making an abode (dwelling place) in us.
The term “another comforter” was used by Jesus several times to refer to the spirit that will be given (John 14:26; John 15:26; John 16:7). In looking at John 14:16-17 closely, Jesus speaks of how:
• The spirit will dwell IN (in verse 16 he pointed to how the spirit will abide with us), and thus in verse 17 explained this further as the spirit which had been WITH them that will now be IN them.
• The indwelling will be FOREVER.
In essence the indwelling of the spirit in a man upon salvation will be an eternal reality for that man. Hence, the believer is indwelt by God’s spirit eternally. Glory!
