GOD’S SPIRIT DWELLS IN YOU (10)

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” – Romans 8:9-16

LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s spirit is in the believer forever.

In last studies, we have looked into the promise of the spirit in the Old Testament (Ezekiel and Joel’s prophecy specifically). Now let’s look at the promise of the spirit in the four gospels. Jesus in his earthly walk as recorded in the synoptic accounts spoke emphatically about the promise of the spirit, when and how it was to be fulfilled. It is good to note that of the four accounts, John’s own was the most detailed in this regard. John 7:37-39 “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”.
Here, Jesus used a symbol; water to refer to the giving of the spirit which was to happen upon him being glorified. Thus, in understanding the fulfillment of the giving of the spirit, it will be related to and as a consequence of Jesus being glorified. The glorification of Jesus relates to his resurrection from the death and subsequent exaltation to the right-hand of the father. Glory!
