“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” – Matthew 6:25
LIGHT FOR NOW: The practice of contentment is necessary for the believer if he must have his desires controlled.
It’s been established that the phrase “Take no thought for your life” means not being anxious about your life. The phrase “hate one and love the other” refers to preference. Jesus taught against uncontrolled desires for money. In the text above, he warned that this unbridled desire for money leads to worries. You cannot serve God and money. Paul reiterates this in his epistles; 1Timothy 6:7-11 “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness”.
So when we are worried, sometimes it’s because of the love for things, money, fame, relationships, etc. The system of this world thrives in the uncontrolled passion for things that will eventually lead us out of God’s will for our lives – “The love of money is the root of all evil”. A desire to satisfy things at all costs will lead to several hurtful lusts. For example, you will begin to lie, take jobs that would not give you the time to serve God, and so on. It’s good to marry for example but not at all cost, the minute the thought of marriage overwhelms you, you may marry wrongly. 1Timothy 6:6 “But godliness with contentment is great gain”. Therefore, the believer must learn to practice contentment. Glory!
