“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” – Matthew 6:25
LIGHT FOR NOW: Count your blessings, name them one by one, and you will see reasons to thank God.
Our previous study made it so obvious that the most important thing in life is life itself. Food, clothing and other material things (cars, houses, etc.) are only relevant because there’s life, not the other way round. Luke 12:19-21 “And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God”. Jesus also spoke about the rich fool. The man was ignorant about the fact that the most valuable thing he had was his life above the material things he boasted in. Life means opportunity. When there’s life, there is opportunity, that is, a chance for something to happen. Life means there is a chance, hope that something can still happen. It means a miracle of healing can still happen (Mark 5:22-29), there can be salvation for people, etc. You can’t have material increase, be healed, do ministry if you are not alive.
Hence, we must learn to be thankful when things are done for our benefits or given to us. We can’t measure kindness; we must learn to value act of kindness done for us even after we can afford it. Psalm 92:1-2 “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night”. We must be thankful both for life and God’s loving-kindness. There is no time when we are going to have everything that we want. A thankful heart knowns that life has its complexities. What you have is what someone else is praying for. So, it’s good and very important to count your blessings one by one and thank God. Glory!
