“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” – 1Peter 5:7
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer must never fall into the trap of letting what he has to have a hold on him.
Having seen that God, our father wants us to prosper (this includes and not limited to a good life with good things), believers must never live in fear of owning or having things but must equally see to it that these things don’t own them. In essence, it is one thing to own things and another for things to own you. The believer must never fall into the trap of letting what he has to have a hold on him. It is not a sin to own things as a believer, but when what you own begins to own you, it can lead to sin; this is because this will be the birthplace of the love of money or mammon and once that takes place, our conducts can begin to change because of the things we have. For instance, high-minded steps in; we begin to think so highly of ourselves because of the strength of our pockets or the solidarity of the money in our accounts; we even begin idolizing the things we have, placing them above the worship of God and his purpose. When your status change as a believer and God becomes a second option, then your priorities have changed; the things you own have turn to own you.
Thus, we must realize that the scriptures teach gravely against the love of money or mammon, often as a warning against idolizing or exalting our needs above our Christian pursuits or godly conduct. Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon”. The need to get things done or have things must not be allowed to dictate how we do things. Yes, we have a right to desire good things including money but what the scriptures teach against is uncontrolled desires or lusts leading to worry. The system of this world drives on worry; it is naturally designed to produce an endless rat-race filled with pursuits for insatiable wants and/or luxuries; this the bible describes as things the believer must be weary of lest he pierces himself with many sorrows and makes a shipwreck of his faith. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Don’t slip into worry because of the desire for good things.
CONFESSION: I am born of the spirit; I exercise temperance and self-control over my wants and walk in contentment, in Jesus name, Amen.
QUOTE: The need to get things done or have things shouldn’t be the dictation of how we do things.
