“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”– Romans 3:19-24
LIGHT FOR NOW: The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus is operational through the believer and not the law of sin and death.
Paul uses the allegory of marriage to explain the hold of sin and the law as well as the freedom from it. The man who has believed the gospel of Christ is freed from the law. Romans 6:17-18 “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness”. Romans 7:2, 4 “For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. Verse 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God”. The marriage to the law via sin is over because of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We are now dead to the law and sin, but alive unto God. This life is the source of our good works not the law. We are not compelled to respond to sin again but have our natural response in the spirit.
Romans 7:5-6 “For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter”. The law could not help the natural man because he was dead; by nature he could not obey the law of God; it was foolishness to him. He lacked the capacity such that even when it was written to him, he failed in understanding it and hence, could not obey it. So the law gave sin the power to destroy. Thank God for grace; it met the requirement of the law and freed us from its hold. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: The law’s demands were not by Christ on your behalf; acknowledge this.
CONFESSION: I have life in Christ; the law of sin and death can no longer work in me, in Jesus name, Amen.
QUOTE: In Jesus fulfilling the law, he met it’s requirement and ended its operation.
