“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”– Romans 3:19-24
LIGHT FOR NOW: No matter the level of a man’s morality, if he or she is not in Christ, the man is not righteous.
In previous study, we talked about a Patriarch of faith by the name Abraham and it was so clear that Abraham’s faith in what God promised was accounted to him for righteousness. Genesis 12:1-3 “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”. The law came hundreds of years after Abraham believed and receive righteousness by faith. Paul makes it clear in Galatians 3 that the law was an addendum by Moses till Christ should come. Galatians 3:19 “Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator”.
The coming of Christ freed us from the law. Hence, Abraham’s blessings are received by faith in Christ Jesus and not by the law. Galatians 3:9-12 “So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them”. The works of the law comes with a curse. They do not make anyone justified. Therefore, the willful insistence of men to live by the law is rebellion to the Grace of God in Christ. No one was made righteous from the works of the law. Righteousness is only through faith in Christ. Glory!
