“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”– Romans 3:19-24
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer by nature is obedient at heart.
The writer of Hebrews echoes this in chapter 7 verse 19; “For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God”. The law made sin more dangerous; it now prescribed blessings and curses, life and death. The escape from the judgment of the law on sin is salvation in Christ Jesus. This is God’s grace given to all men. Grace means you will not work for it; it will be freely given to you, you will just receive. Ephesians 2:4-6 “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”.
The antidote for judgment is mercy; the grace of God is his mercy that men should receive. So the believer is not under the law because he has received the grace of God and has been given God’s mercy from the consequence of sin. The believer is now free from the law and its condemnation. Romans 6:17-18, 22 “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life”. The conduct of the believer is as a result of that freedom; it is part of the work of God’s grace in him, so the believer does not try to do but his ability is from what God has made him in Christ Jesus. He does not need laws to obey God; he is born of the obedience of Christ. Obedience is his nature. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: It is not a struggle to obey God; it is your DNA; acknowledge this!
CONFESSION: I have the mercy of God because I have received his grace in Christ. My conduct is after my new nature in Christ; I walk in all the goodness and grace God has given me in Christ Jesus, Amen.
QUOTE: The believer is not without ability to live out the God life; he has all the ability he would ever need in him.
