“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore, by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”– Romans 3:19-24
LIGHT FOR NOW: The law is of works and effort of men, but faith is by God’s grace.
It
was clear in our last study that the ordinances and statutes of the law were written in response to the state of Israel’s heart; they were rebellious, stiff-neck, and faithless generation. Deuteronomy 32:20 “And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith”. They did not believe the word of God sent to them through Moses. So, the law did not come out of faith but unbelief. Matthew 19:1-8 “And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there. The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so”.
We will find clarity in the epistles, which are the revelation of the scriptures (Genesis to Malachi). Galatians 3:12 “And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them”. We may conduct our lives by the ordinances and statutes of the law, but that will be part from faith to believe in God’s salvation. The law is of works and effort of men, but faith is by God’s grace. Glory!
