REDEMPTION – WAS IT COMPLETED ON THE CROSS? (1)

“But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance” – Hebrews 9:11-15

LIGHT FOR NOW: On the cross, redemption was not consummated; it’s upon the resurrection of Jesus that redemption was consummated.

There have been several songs that infer that redemption was completed when Jesus died on the cross. That is, at the point where Jesus died, redemption was done. Note, salvation was consummated in three acts; the death of Jesus, the burial of Jesus, and his bodily resurrection with his ascension to present his blood before God. 1Corinthians 15:3-4 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures”. Let us however read, 1Corinthians 15:13-14 “But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain”.
Observe 1 Corinthians 15:17 “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins”. The word “vain” (in the above) means worthless; futile. So, Jesus had to come out of the dead (grave) to show that the price had been paid; so, the resurrection confirms the work of redemption and it puts the final seal on what Christ has done. In essence, redemption’s reality is in the resurrection. Redemption’s completion is in the resurrection. So, redemption was consummated on the cross but in the resurrection of Jesus. Glory!
