“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing Psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”. – James 5:13-16
LIGHT FOR NOW: Receiving in prayers is when you pray while having is afterward.
Based on Jesus’ words in verse 23 of Mark 11, he lays a foundation for prayer, “what thing soever…” (verse 24). That means in the place of prayer, I must expect to receive; this is the prayer of faith. James says “the prayer of faith shall save the sick…” We’ve seen in Mark 11:23 and 24 that when we pray, we believe that we receive. There is therefore an underlying principle we need to pay attention to. Note again: “What things soever you expect when you pray, believe that you receive…” Is it possible to pray without an expectation? If prayer automatically means expectation, then Jesus will not mention expectation. “…when you pray, believe that you receive (that is, expectation) and you shall have…” “…Believe that you receive what things so ever you expect, and you shall have that things so ever that you expect”. You will have whatever you desire when you pray.
Recall that prayer involves receiving and receiving is part of prayer. Then, it implies that receiving in prayers is different from having the request that was prayed for. Hence, Jesus clearly states in Mark 11:24 “…what things so ever… shall have”. From Jesus’ words, receiving is when we pray, while having what we ask is afterward. Therefore, receiving in prayer is what Jesus calls the payer of faith. Glory!
