“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you”. – Ephesians 4:29-32
LIGHT FOR NOW: The forgiveness of sins, which is what we have in redemption, is not just a reality to be enjoyed, but a reality to be exemplified in our Christian walk.
A fundamental truth of scripture is the concept of forgiveness. Forgiveness of sins is a major bible truth. In this Christian faith, forgiveness is a major. It is a major fact of the gospel we herald. Forgiveness of sins is the character of the gospel. You can’t talk about the goodness of the gospel and exclude forgiveness of sins. It is the good news itself that makes the gospel the good news. Let’s observe the writer of Hebrews in Hebrews 8:12 “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more”. 2Corinthians 5:19 “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation”.
If forgiveness of sins is removed from the gospel, the gospel is reduced to nothing. God displayed his love to humanity via forgiveness of sins. Romans 5:8-10 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life”. Matthew 26:28 “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins”. Remission of sins implies the release or taking away of the penalty for sins. The believer is therefore instructed to forgive others as God forgave us. Glory!
