“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life”– Romans 5:1-10
LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s disposition and character has always been love towards an undeserving man – this is the grace of God.
All through the ages, God has never changed in his disposition to sinners – He loves them. In Luke 9:54 after Jesus was slandered by men, his disciples were infuriated and wanted to call down fire to destroy. “And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of” (Luke 9:54-55). Jesus rebuked them. The word “rebuke” there was the same word he used for when casting out demons. Matthew 9:13 “But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”.
John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”. He called sinners his friends. Luke 7:36 “And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat”. He even ate with the Pharisees. In verse 39 of Luke 7, he allowed a sinner to kiss his feet; “Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for he is a sinner”. God’s love for sinners is overwhelming. Glory!
