BEHOLDING HIS LOVE – OUR RESPONSIBILITY IN HIS LOVE

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”– 1John 3:1

LIGHT FOR NOW:The believer must behold the Father’s love.

The first word in this chapter above was an instruction – the word “BEHOLD”. That word “behold” means to observe or look sternly or to actively consider a truth. The truth in this context is that the father has lavished us with his love. The word “bestowed” means to give extravagantly or give without restrictions. It is similar to James’ expression in James 1:5 where he described God as a giving God. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). The word “liberally” describes his giving as one who would never find a reason not to give. The word “behold” was also used in 2Corinthians 5:17 in referring to our new creature reality. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2Corinthians 5:17).

This was the same also in Matthew 28:20 where we were instructed to observe his ever-abiding presence in us. James 1:25 “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed”. The difference between the doer and the hearer in the context was that he continued to look. He kept being aware that this was why he did not forget. So, sons of God are meant to enjoy the Christian walk by observing or focusing on these realities. Colossians 2:6 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him”. We received him when we received the message of his love and this ought to remain our meditation. We are to continue to observe his love for us; it is not a once and for all event. Glory!
