“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love”– Revelation 2:4
LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s love for man is independent of man’s good or bad actions.
The book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John. Just like every other apostolic writings, it is built upon the truth of Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection. Revelation 1:2-3 “Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand”. John’s prophecy was founded on the testimony of Christ. He firstly described Christ’s work and what he had accomplished for us as believers. This he did before writing out his personal encounter. Revelation 1:5-6 “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen”.
Taking a closer look at his statement, we see that all he spoke of was God’s action of love toward us. He never mentioned or implied a part we played. Observe also that God’s expression of love for us was in the past. He never pointed us to any experience whatsoever. The love of God was demonstrated by the death and resurrection of Christ and it remains the bedrock of the Christian love walk. As earlier explained, God never placed a demand on us to love him. His love for us was not a reaction to our love or him. Even when we were enemies, God loved us with an everlasting love. Romans 5:6 “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly”. So, Christ’s death was for the ungodly. While we were in our ungodly state, Christ died for us. The Passion Translation of Romans 5:6 puts it this way “For when the time was right, the Anointed One came and died to demonstrate his love for sinners who were entirely helpless, weak, and powerless to save themselves”. This is love. Glory!
