PRAYER VOCABULARY – TONGUES (14)

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching hereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”– Ephesians 6:18

LIGHT FOR NOW: At new birth you became a brand new creature that never existed before with a brand new language that never existed before.

In the great commission as stated in the last chapters of the Gospels of Matthew and Mark (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-18), Jesus said that a sign that will follow the New Testament believer is speaking in new tongues. Mark 16:17 “And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name shall they cast our devils; they shall speak with NEW TONGUES”. The word “new” here is gotten from the Greek word “kainos” which is the same Greek word that Paul used when he used the term “new creature”. 2Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new”. Now, the Greek word “kainos” implies the following:

  • Something new and unheard of.
  • Of a new kind
  • A brand-new species that never existed before.
  • Fresh and new

In essence, when you became a born again believer, you became a brand new species of being that never existed before. Likewise, speaking in tongues is a brand new thing that never existed before; hence the Greek word “kainos” – “kainosglossa” – new tongues. It is something recently made, of a new kind, unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of. It was not so in the time of Abraham, Moses, Elijah, and John the Baptist, but it certainly is so, far after the resurrection. Paul spoke in tongues, as did the Apostles Peter and John and the 120 believers in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. That is why we do not see tongues mentioned in the Old Testament except promissory; it was a reality in the Old Testament. Speaking or praying in tongues was and is a new phenomenon that belongs to believers after the cross – that is, upon the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. By virtue of being a new creature upon the new birth made possible by God’s new spirit, you have a new tongue. So, new tongues should be spoken by those of the new birth. Glory!

INSTRUCTION:Be constant and consistent in prayers – praying in tongues.

CONFESSION:I pray more in the spirit now more than ever, in Jesus name, Amen.

QUOTE: New tongues should be spoken by those of the new faith.
