PRAYER VOCABULARY – TONGUES (8)

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching hereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”– Ephesians 6:18

LIGHT FOR NOW: Your human understanding and mind is bypassed in prayers when you pray in the spirit.

The term “praying in the spirit” which is praying in tongues was mentioned several times in scriptures. 1Corinthians 14:2 “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; how be it in the spirit he speaketh mysteries”. Pay close attention to verse 15 of 1Corinthians 14:15 “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also”. The word “understanding” in 1Corinthians 14:15 was translated from the Greek word “nous” which refers to the mind, your thinking or your mindset. The NIV version puts it this way: “So what will I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind” (1Corinthians 14:15).

In essence, when Paul refers to praying with your understanding, he was referring to your mind. Praying in the spirit is the realm of tongues is the realm of prayer where the mind is bypassed. So, what exactly does it mean to pray in the spirit? They are those who do not believe in “glossolalia” – that is “speaking with other tongues”, and they disdain the phenomenon. They say that praying in the spirit is prayer that is led and guided by the Holy Spirit. Well, of course, we certainly believe that. All prayer should be led by the Holy Spirit and out of your spirit. However, they are two kinds of spirit-led prayer;

  • One is done with the mind engaged in your known tongue and;
  • The other is done with the mind bypassed. Paul advocates this when he said “I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding” (1Corinthians 14:15).

Praying with the spirit is synonymous to praying in the spirit and synonymous to “…as the spirit gave them utterance” as recorded in Acts 2:4. Tongues in prayers are spirit utterance in prayers. Glory!

INSTRUCTION:Have the lifestyle of prayer.

DECLARATION:I pray always and at all times – with spirit utterance, in Jesus Name, Amen

QUOTE: Tongues in prayers are spirit utterance in prayers.
