“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching hereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”– Ephesians 6:18
LIGHT FOR NOW:Part of the reality that comes with the new birth is the reality of tongues.
Just like Paul in our above key text, Jude spoke in like manner; Jude 1:20 “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost”. It has been established that what Paul calls praying in the spirit in Ephesians 6:18 is what Jude calls “Praying in the Holy Ghost”. Hence, praying in the spirit is synonymous to praying in the Holy Ghost and praying in tongues. Notice, Jude also mentions the fact that he is of the most holy faith. Observe that he centers that activity of praying in the Holy Ghost as that which builds the believer on his most holy faith. What does Jude mean? The opening words of his letter carry the answer. Jude 1:1-3 “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints”.
In verse 3, he mentioned a common salvation. Both the writer and audience of this epistle have the same salvation. Just like every epistle was written to follow up on what had been taught by the apostles, this was no different. The focus and audience of the letter was for people of faith. The word “common” was translated from a word that speaks of something that is available to all without any extra qualifications. Think of something that is available to all. It is not exclusive or special. He calls it the faith and makes a call for its defense. It implies what is general, that is, what is not special. It will thus show, even as we will see in this study, that since salvation is common (that is available to all in the faith without any extra qualifications), then speaking in tongues or praying in the Holy Ghost which is in salvation will be something available for all in the faith; it will not be for exclusive or special people in the faith and there will be no extra qualification required to function in this reality as a believer. Glory!
