“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching hereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”–Ephesians 6:18
LIGHT FOR NOW: When you pray in tongues, you build yourself on your most holy faith.
Paul’s words in the part A of Ephesians 6:18 gave us a lead into investigating the subject of tongues or praying in the spirit or praying in the Holy Ghost. Paul says “Praying always with all prayers and supplication in the spirit (or in the Holy Ghost or in tongues)”. Like we said in previous study, “Praying in tongues/praying in the spirit/praying in the Holy Ghost” is central to this study and recognizes our undivided attention. Just like Paul’s epistle to the church at Ephesus on Ephesians 6:18, Jude 1:20 says; “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost”. What Ephesians 6:15 calls praying in the spirit is what Jude 1:20 calls “Praying in the Holy Ghost”. In essence, praying in the spirit is synonymous to praying in the Holy Ghost and praying in tongues.
So, Jesus uses the term “praying in the Holy Ghost” in his epistles. Notice, he calls the focus of the one he is addressing and uses the term “beloved” for him. A term reserved for believers; men who have believed the gospel. He used that word two other times in the epistle. Jude 1:3 “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write to you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints”. Jude 1:17 “But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ”. He also mentions the fact that he is of the most holy faith. Observe that he centers that activity of praying in the Holy Ghost as that which builds the believer on his most holy faith. When the believer prays in tongues, he builds himself on his most holy faith. Glory!
