And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”. – 2 Timothy 3:15
LIGHT FOR NOW: God’s rest for man is Christ.
We have already established that scripture interprets scripture, and for us to fully understand the scriptures, we must fully know what the spirit of truth reveals in the New Covenant. In Genesis 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made”.
Moses was communicating a spiritual reality, which he called the seventh day, and he said God blessed the seventh day. The question is: “What is the seventh day that God blessed?” In verse 3, we see the word ‘sanctified’ which is The Hebrew word “Qadash” which means “sanctified, to appoint, purify and to set apart”. So why would God set apart a day and call it rest?
Exodus 16:26-27, 30 “six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is Sabbath, in it there shall be none. And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day to gather, and they found none. So the people rested on the seventh day”.
We can, therefore, say from what Moses wrote, God didn’t imply “seven days” as in numbering but “seventh day” as in a period. This shows that it was a message and not a practice; it was a message that man should cease from works and focus on redemption. Mark 2:27-28 further explains that the Sabbath wasn’t made for man to observe. “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: Therefore, the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath”. He calls himself the rest or the Sabbath. This infers, Moses was communicating salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, who is God’s rest for man. Glory!
