“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus”. – 2 Timothy 3:15
LIGHT FOR NOW: The study of salvation is the study of the Savior.
Apostle Paul admonishes us that the scripture is given to make us wise. The word “wise” according to our text is from the Greek word “sophizo” which does not necessarily imply brilliance or scholastic training, but rather the ability to apply with skill what one knows especially when applying spiritual truths in one’s life. The question is: what are you to be wise unto? Salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.
The word “salvation” is derived from the Greek word “soteria” which means to save, preserve, protect and deliver from sin and it’s spiritual consequence and admission to eternal life with blessedness in the kingdom of Christ. By having salvation, you must have a Saviour, and to know your Savior, you must know the scriptures because it is only the scriptures that would bring a man into the knowledge of salvation.
In essence, having salvation through faith in this context refers to having a moral conviction or credence or reliance upon Christ for salvation. Therefore, understanding the scriptures is a skill that we need to learn in order to have the right knowledge about the work of Christ, which is salvation. Glory!
