THE LEADING OF THE SPIRIT (29)

“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit with you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them”. – Ezekiel 36:25-27

LIGHT FOR NOW: The word of God is to be the final authority in the believer’s life. No experience or dream should be exalted above God’s word.

Still on our investigation on the leading of the spirit, let’s talk about dreams. Joseph in Matthew 1 received guidance through the dream he had. Prior to the dream, he had a prevalent thought on his mind about Mary’s conception, and he resolved to secretly put her away. Matthew 1:24 “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife”. That means he woke up and knew God was probably speaking to him. Something about a dream is that right in the dream, you are so alert.

Therefore, to the physical body, it is a dream, but the spiritual faculties are alert. That is why you almost think it is real. Observe Peter’s explanation of the event in Acts. He quoted the prophecy of Joel. Acts 2:17 “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams”.

Acts 2:17 was a quotation of Joel 2:28. So, dreams can come from the spirit of a believer. Let us examine what Solomon said about dreams. Ecclesiastes 5:3,7 “For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words… for in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God”. In essence, he was saying dreams come out of the multitude of activities of the mind. This means that there was a communication of an activity in the mind of that man. Hence, he goes into sleep and engages in that activity.

In the dream, there is an exercise of the mind. Hence, the man has a part to play in the dreams that he has. Though God leads us by dreams; however, this is not to say that God talks to us through every dream that we have. It is therefore instructive for one not to exalt dreams. God as seen in many instances in the scriptures, leads by the gifts of the spirit, visions and dreams, but they are not the primary way he guides; hence, they must not be exalted beyond the words. Glory!

INSTRUCTION: Place premium on God’s word.

CONFESSION: I am guided, directed, and always led by God, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

QUOTE: The leading of the spirit for the believer is not eternal but internal.
