“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit with you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them”. – Ezekiel 36:25-27
LIGHT FOR NOW: The habit and art of consistent study of God’s word is a key pre-requisite is following God’s leading.
Still on what the inward witness is not, it’s already clearly established that the inward witness is not formed from an opinion that we have. Most importantly, the inward witness does not bring fear because fear paralyzes. You can’t be in faith and in fear simultaneously. Hence, a believer must not give room to fear. Now, we began an investigation on the term “conscience” which many people have, though that it is the voice of the spirit.
However, conscience is not the voice of the spirit. “Conscience” means dominant thoughts, habits, and customs. My conscience is a function of the dominant thoughts in my mind; it’s a product of what I feast upon regularly. The inward witness is not the conscience. In the Old Testament, the fact that they kept bringing sin offerings developed a sin consciousness.
Hebrews 10:3 “But in those sacrifices they offered year by year there was a remembrance again made of sins every year”. Again, conscience is a function of something you exercise yourself in all the time. Conscience is not the leading of the spirit but my own making. It is how you treat information that comes to you. This is why we have some who have the conscience of idols even though we know that there are no idols in this world. But since they feed on such information, they have that consciousness. 1Corinthians 8:4 “As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one”. Romans 14:1 “Him that is weak in the faith receives ye, [but] not to doubtful disputations”.
This means that we have believers with weak conscience. As we have seen also, we have folks that have sin consciousness. This consciousness will affect a person’s mind; it will hinder him from perceiving the things of the spirit. Glory!
