“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit with you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them”. – Ezekiel 36:25-27
LIGHT FOR NOW: The inward witness and conscience are not synonyms. Your conscience is your making.
In previous studies, we began investigating into what the inward witness is not. It thus was clearly established that the inward witness is not formed from an opinion that we have. Most critically, the inward witness does not bring fear to you because fear paralyzes. Fear (which implies terror or timidity) is not in our spirit. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. I must deal with fear. I can’t listen to God and be in fear at the same time because there is no leading of the spirit that does not have natural circumstances that negate what God has said. So I must deal with fear. I can’t be in faith and in fear at the same time.
Some things to note are:
• Conscience:
Some people have thought that conscience is the voice of the spirit. No, it is not. The word “conscience” means dominant thoughts, habits, and customs. My conscience is a function of the dominant thoughts in my mind; it’s a product of what I feast upon regularly. The inward witness is not our conscience. In the Old Testament, the fact that they kept bringing sin offerings developed a sin consciousness.
Hebrews 10:3 “In those sacrifices they offered year by year, there was a remembrance again made of sins every year”. Conscience is a function of something you exercised yourself in all the time. Conscience is not the leading of the spirit but my own making. It is how you treat information that comes to you. So, conscience is not the inward spirit. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Feast and feed on God’s word.
CONFESSION: I live in God’s plan for my life; I follow his leading always, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
QUOTE: The inward witness is not synonymous with conscience.
