“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit with you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them”. – Ezekiel 36:25-27
LIGHT FOR NOW: The believer in Christ has the indwelling of the spirit within him, so direction comes from within him and not outside him.
It is important and pertinent to discuss the indwelling of the spirit which is the agency of the new birth as it is the fabric to discussing the leading of the spirit. The leading of the spirit must be first preceded by the indwelling of the spirit. So, a fundamental fact to note also in understanding the leading of the spirit is that God has given every believer his spirit. In Romans chapter 8, Apostle Paul has this to say, “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9). We are His! Romans 8:14 “For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God”. We are led by his spirit. He will not lead us anymore than he has led us. “Led” here carries the thought of union with another. “His spirit” used above is a very strong word. It infers and implies partnership, fellowship, oneness.
Noteworthy is the fact that the indwelling of the spirit or the spirit of God indwelling in a man was a prophecy under the Old Covenant. Our key text (Ezekiel 36:25-27) is a perfect example. The promise of the spirit was fulfilled in Christ and received by faith in the gospel. The minute a man believes the gospel, he receives the spirit of God (Ephesians 1:13). So, believers are sealed with the spirit – we are indwelt by the spirit. Don’t forget that the leading of the spirit is an offshoot of the indwelling of the spirit. It thus shows that direction comes within us, not outside us. We look inside us for direction, we don’t look outside for direction. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: You are led by the spirit – acknowledge this.
CONFESSION: I don’t walk in the part of confusion, I have the leading of the spirit always, in Jesus Name. Amen.
QUOTE: We don’t look outside for direction; we look inside for direction.
