LIGHT FOR NOW: The leading of the spirit is for the one who has received the indwelling of the spirit, which is the agency of the new birth.
From a couple of investigation on this subject, it is a clear fact that it’s not always a problem with God to direct the believer, God by his spirit always makes available his leading and direction; but the problem is always with the believer being spiritually alert and sensitive to identify God’s direction or detect the direction that God by his spirit is giving him or her and following same. In essence, it is in God’s place to always direct the believer, and it is in the believers’ place to identify and follow God’s direction.
The believer, thus, is not to be passive in the leading of the spirit. This is because he equally has a role to play in the leading of the spirit. In as much as God has his role, God will not play the believers’ role for the believer. God is to make available the direction, and we’ve seen that God is committed to that; the believer, on the other hand, is to identify the direction and follow it.
Let’s pay attention to Isaiah in Isaiah 48:17 “Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go”.
This is the redeemer himself (God) talking, and the redeemer himself makes it clear that he leads us.
In essence, the leading of God or the leading of the spirit is what we have in redemption. The redeemed of the Lord are led by their redeemer in redemption. The redeemed of the Lord (believers) don’t cry and pray to God requesting for God to give them a leading or direction, no! The redeemed of the Lord (believers) only pray to identify the direction that God is giving him.
The leading of the spirit is for the one who has been indwelt with God’s spirit. And the indwelling of the spirit is the agency of the new birth; that is how a man gets born again. So, by the indwelling of the spirit (the new birth), you have the reality of the leading of the spirit. Glory!
