“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps”. – Jeremiah 10:23
LIGHT FOR NOW: It is in God’s place to always direct the believer; it is in the believers’ place to identify and follow the direction that God is giving him.
In Psalm 37:23, the writer has this to say “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way”. We’ve established that the word “good” in the above text is not in the original; hence, it is italicized because it was added by translators of the King James.
Therefore, reading it without the italicized word echoes “The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way”. The content now reveals which man he was talking about because he was not talking about any kind of man or any kind of good man. Thus, verse 25 of Psalm 37 shows us he was referring to the righteous (the believer).
So, the believer has the guidance of God or the leading of the spirit as a reality in the new birth.
Notice the last statement in Psalm 37:23 “…and he delighteth in his way”. The word “delighteth” there was translated from the Greek word “chaphets” which implies to take pleasure in; to be pleased with. In essence, God takes pleasure in ordering your steps. God takes pleasure in leading you. God takes pleasure in directing your steps. He delights that your course of life and mode of action be patterned after his plans and purpose.
It is not always a problem with God to direct the believer, God by his spirit always makes available his leading and direction, but the problem is always with the believer being spiritually alert and sensitive to detect the direction that God is giving him/her and following it. From a couple of the Old Testament texts we’ve read so far, including our key text, we’ve seen God’s commitment to always directing us. So, it’s not a problem with God to direct or guide us, but when a believer lacks spiritual sensitivity and alertness, it becomes difficult to identify or detect the direction of God’s spirit in his life. Glory!
INSTRUCTION: Constantly affirm your realities in Christ.
CONFESSION: I know what to do; I know where to go; I am led by the spirit always, in Jesus’s name, Amen.
QUOTE: God is committed to directing us, and he will not change his mind.
