“O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps”. – Jeremiah 10:23
LIGHT FOR NOW: God, by his word, is always committed to leading, directing, and guiding us through the vehicle of his spirit in us.
A vital truth to come to terms with is that direction is a crucial part of human existence.
• Man will always need guidance.
• Man will always need leading.
• Man will always need direction.
Also, man (male and female) will always need to make decisions. Thus, this importance attached to decision making underscores the reason why the believer must properly understand that he is led by the spirit and how he can follow that leading. It is saddening to know that the fear of not making the wrong decisions has driven many into indulging in erroneous and fatal practices, while some live life as it comes; leaving it to change – this is not to be for the believer in Christ.
The believer must come to terms with the fact that provision has been made for him in God’s word for his guidance. The words of Jeremiah in our above key text (Jeremiah 10:23) points out the need and importance of direction, leading and guidance to man. Man needs guidance and this is why in the prophecies of the Old Testament, we see a commitment of God’s guidance. Observe the Psalmist words in Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye”.
The word “guide” in Psalm 32:8 was translated from the Hebrew word “yaats”; it implies to guide or give guidance; to advise; give counsel. Another shade of that word is purpose or plan.
God, by his word, has a commitment to guide us by his spirit in us. By his spirit, he counsels us in sync with his word, and this makes us wise as touching the decisions we make regarding our lives. By his spirit, he lets us know his plans and purpose for our lives, which we are to follow. If direction was not important, God wouldn’t be committed to leading us right so that we can be in sync with his plan and purpose for our lives.
Therefore, direction will thus come with the new birth; the leading of the spirit will come with the new birth. In essence, the leading of the spirit will be an off-shoot of the new birth. Glory!
