“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” – 1Thessalonians 5:18 NLT
LIGHT FOR NOW: Accurate knowledge of God’s words and promises results in effective thanksgiving.
Our focal point for today’s study is on the power benefits of thanksgiving. When we show gratitude, our focus moves away from selfish desires and off the pain of the current circumstances we face. Thanksgiving also affirms God’s character of divine providence. The word “providence” in theology is defined as the divinity in which human kind bases the belief in a benevolent intervention in human affairs and the affairs of the world.
Matthew 14:15-21 explains this better “When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, ‘This is an isolated place and the hour is already late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves’. But Jesus said to them, ‘They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat’. They replied, ‘We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish’. He said, ‘Bring them here to Me’. Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and He took the five loaves and the two fish and, looking up toward heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people, and they all ate and were. They picked up twelve full baskets of the leftover broken pieces. They were about 5000 men who ate, besides women and children”.
This is God’s character of divine providence displayed. Jesus didn’t complain when the disciples told him that the food available won’t go round, rather he took hold of the available and gave thanks to the God whose words are true’ instantly the miracle of divine providence happened. Again, this is what Thanksgiving can do. Glory!
