“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (which he had promised afore by his prophets in the Holy Scriptures)” – Romans 1:1
LIGHT FOR NOW: The scriptures testify of Christ.
In the text above, Paul lets us know that the bible is separated from other writings. The word “holy” in the above text was translated from the Greek word “hagios”. This word implies that which is sacred; separately to be treated to specially or differently. Recall that Paul used the phrase “Holy Scriptures” in 2 Timothy 3:15. In essence, the bible is a different, sacred writing, set apart writing, and a separate writing.
The word “scripture” (“graphe”) implies what is written or documented, and it deals with grammar, words, letters, phrases, statements, and the writing itself. In essence, we can refer to the bible as literature. Why? This is because the authors in their writings used figures of speech (metaphor, simile, oxymoron, metonym, personification, hyperbole, allegory, etc.; fictions, idioms, poetry and imageries). That will imply that the semantics of words and their lexical definition must be taken into consideration to arrive at the proper bible interpretation.
Hence, when interpreting a text of scriptures, the grammatical construction of words, the tenses used; contextual analysis and other vital rules governing bible interpretation must not be ignored if a text of scripture must be rightly divided. Now, knowing that the bible is a literature composed of spiritual information aimed at communicating and understanding the question now is, how should the bible be read? The bible must be read in the light of Christ. It is a Christ centered material that carries with it a Christ centered message. Glory!
