LIGHT FOR NOW: Eternal life is not earned; it’s a gift from God.
Many people today are teaching that one can receive eternal life from God in a variety of ways as long as he is sincere in his beliefs. In other words, sincerity is the key to life. This is a pleasant thought and can provide a certain level of false security until we realize that nowhere else in the world is the basis for determining reality. Have you ever made a wrong turn with all sincerity and still ended at the wrong destination? The problem with this philosophy is that it doesn’t agree with the teachings of the bible. Man has been rebelling against God since the time of creation. He has always attempted to solve his problems by his own abilities. However, he faces the supreme question. How can he know for certain that he has eternal life? If it is worked for or earned, then it is not a gift. A gift therefore, will be something given to another voluntarily, without change and without effort. If eternal life is worked for by the recipient, then Jesus should have said “I give eternal life to those who have worked for it”. Or “I give eternal life to those who have merited it by their own self effort”. So, no man can work for eternal life. Man can only receive eternal life as a free gift available in Christ. Eternal life is thus God’s free gift.
In Romans 6:23, Paul says the gift of God is eternal life and he elucidates further by saying it is the gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. “Through Jesus Christ our Lord” implies that eternal life is found in Christ. Therefore, until a man arrives in Christ, all he has is human life. Eternal life is the very life of God; the life that comes from God. At salvation, God’s life became your life. Glory!
