“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is no remission” – Hebrews 9:22
LIGHT FOR NOW: The shedding of the blood of Jesus was not on the cross.
The truth is that every believer ought to know that Jesus paid the price for sin and He did it with His own blood; this is the bedrock of Christianity. This event is in relation to our redemption – that which Christ did for man. But it is bemusing to see the many uses of the blood of Jesus today. We see the blood of Jesus used as a means of protection, deliverance, promotion, judgment and all sorts. The fact is that when the believer does not come to the full appreciation of the blood of Jesus, he gets involved with the practices mentioned above. The believer loses the importance of what Christ did when the blood was shed where he or she begins to use the blood or as it is called, plead the blood for protection or deliverance from danger. That is why before a local church gets involved in doctorial matters and practices, there ought to be a thorough explanation and examination of the subject in the scriptures; we should only rely on the explanation given to us in the epistles. We should be loud where the apostles were loud and silent where they were silent. According to Leviticus 16:15-19, the concept of shedding of blood was established under the old covenant; it was a shadow of what Jesus was going to do. It was an act exclusive to the High priest under the Old covenant; where he would kill an animal and sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat. The shedding of blood was done behind the veil in the holy of holies and only the High priest went in to carry out this act; it was done once a year for the atonement of the sins of Israel. So the atonement was therefore the result of the shedding of blood. “For the life of the flesh (is) in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it (is) the blood (that) maketh atonement for the soul” (Leviticus 17:11).
Now, the short coming of the old covenant was that the atonement was only a covering for sin, it didn’t take away sin. Hence, the sacrifice had to be done yearly. The shedding of the blood of Jesus was not on the cross, the writer of Hebrew says, “for Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, (which are) the figure of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear, in the presence of God for us” (Hebrews 9:24). Jesus shed His blood in the heavens implying that where Jesus shed His blood is immaterial – not a physical place. Verse 14 of Hebrews 9 says, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God”? That which Jesus did, by shedding His blood once and for all have brought unto us that believe salvation. We are eternally saved, justified and preserved. Nothing can undo that which the blood of Jesus has done. GLORY!
