“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” – Mark 16:15-18
LIGHT FOR NOW: Jesus is the message; the crux and focus of the gospel.
Still on our investigation of the use of the word gospel particularly in the epistles, we’ve come to see that where we have this word “gospel” used by Paul in the epistles (1st and 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians), Paul was peculiar about two words: “Preaching/preach” and “Christ” (the gospel of Christ). Moreover, Apostle Peter in his first epistle as we saw in our previous study used the phrase “the gospel”; it reads “Being born again , not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God which liveth and abideth forever. But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached to you” (1Peter 1:23, 25). Notice in his words here that it is clear; a man is born again by the gospel that is preached unto him, which he believes in.
The word “born again” used by Peter in verse 23 is from the Greek word “anagennao”, this was the same word Peter used in verse 3 translated as “begotten again”. Having read 1Peter 1:23, 25, the question is: what gospel was preached unto them? The context of explanation will thus suffice in answering this, let’s read “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace be multiplied. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1Peter 1:2-4). Thus, the gospel that was preached to them was concerning the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The new birth (being born again) therefore is in his resurrection; the incorruptible seed. Again, the focus is on the person of Jesus. Hallelujah!
INSTRUCTION: Jesus is the message; let Him be your focus.
PRAYER: Father, I declare that deep insight is granted me into the gospel of Christ, in Jesus Name, Amen.
QUOTE: Take away Jesus from the gospel, and we don’t have any gospel.
