THE SPIRIT’S WORK WHEN BELIEVERS SIN (3)

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness because I go to my father, and ye see me no more; of judgment because the prince of this world is judged – John 16:8-11

LIGHT FOR NOW:  Faults or wrongs are spotted out if correction must be effected.

Having understood that the above key text was not in reference to Christian living but Jesus’ resurrection, we began exploring certain facts about correction and fault-finding, and from Matthew 17:17, Mark 4:40, it is clear that Jesus pointed out their wrongs. That’s the Spirit speaking; the Spirit of God, telling them what they did wrong. However, the difference is correction teaches what you should do or should have done. Like a school class teacher marks your scripts, and then afterwards does a class correction to show what you should have written where you missed the mark or issues. In Luke 24:25, Jesus has this to say “Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:” Did Jesus point out their faults or wrong actions here? The answer is yes, “O fools and slow of heart to believe…” They were slow of heart to believe; so fault-finding or wrong action was shown here. And verse 24 reads, “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27). So observe two things:

  • In Luke 24:25, their faults or wrong action was shown or pointed out.
  • In Luke 24:27, Jesus then corrected them.

Also, in Matthew 17:20 Jesus effected a correction, it reads, “And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder places: and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you”. So, there can’t be correction without spotting out the wrong deed; but it is mere fault-finding when there is no instruction and information of what to do. This is the Spirit’s work:

  • The Spirit rebukes when we go wrong.
  • And the Spirit corrects when we do wrong.

The Spirit spots out the wrongdoing, rebukes it and then corrects it. In essence, it will be impossible for the spirit to effect a correction without first spotting out the wrong deed, and thus, if wrong deeds are not first spotted out, then correction will be impossible. So does the Spirit rebuke us when we do wrong? Yes; this is not the law, this is still; and in grace, there is rebuke and correction. Hallelujah!

INSTRUCTION: Never reject God’s rebuke and correction when you go wrong.

PRAYER: Thank you Lord for your Spirit that lives in me wherewith I have your name, I declare that I can walk in the reality of this nature, in Jesus Name, Amen.

QUOTE: Rebuke and correction is part of grace, it is not law.
