YOU ARE THE FORGIVEN (6)

To open their eyes, and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me – Acts 26:18

LIGHT FOR NOW: At the point of faith in Christ where a man confesses Christ, his sins were forgiven.

We established previously from Paul’s words in our key text that forgiveness of sins is received by faith in Christ. So we deduced that at the point of salvation, a man confesses Christ and is saved; he does not confess his sins to be saved; meaning, forgiveness of sins is not received by confessing sins at the point of salvation or by daily confession of sins after being saved, forgiveness of sins is received once at the point of salvation. At the point a man has faith in Christ and confesses him, his sins are forgiven. A man receives forgiveness of sins at the point of salvation, and not a daily experience each time one confesses his sins. In chapter 10 of Paul’s letter to the Romans, he has this to say “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved… so then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:13, 17). Notice, Paul in verse 13 did not say “Whosoever shall call upon his sins (individual misdeeds) shall be saved”, he said “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord”. Then in verse 17 he says “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”. The statement “hearing by the word of God” is best rendered in Greek as “the message of Christ”. In other words, “faith cometh by hearing the message of Christ”. Remember, Paul in our key text say that a man receives forgiveness of sins by faith in Christ, and he is now telling us now that “faith cometh by hearing the message of Christ”. In other words, for there to be faith in Christ where forgiveness of sins is found, a message must be preached and this preaching precedes it because it is this preaching that will supply faith. The next question we will begin to examine in subsequent studies is:

  • Can we accurately say that forgiveness is “a preaching” or can we say that forgiveness “a prayer”?
  • Is forgiveness an answer to a daily confession of sins or is it a by-product of a once and for all confession of Christ?
  • Do the epistles teach the confession of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins or the confessing of sins for the forgiveness of sins?
  • If the forgiveness of sins is not a product of a daily confession of sins, what about 1John 1:9; could it be contradictory?

Let’s get this question answered in subsequent studies and then get into the high point of this study where we will carefully examine what happens if believers sin, does sin break the believers’ relationship with God?, what does the Holy Spirit do when we sin?, what does God do as toughing a believer who sins?, how can a believer deal with acts of sin in his life and break free from habits of sin, etc.? Hallelujah!

INSTRUCTION: Stay with the word and not the hearsays.

PRAYER: I declare a stirring in my heart for the knowledge of your word, in Jesus Name.  Amen.

QUOTE: Faith in Christ equals forgiveness of sins.
