YOU ARE THE FORGIVEN (4)

To open their eyes, and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me – Acts 26:18

LIGHT FOR NOW: Forgiveness of sins is the believers’ inheritance the day he believes in Christ.

Paul in the above text makes it clear that forgiveness of sins is received; hence, the statement “that they may receive forgiveness of sins”. Now, notice the next word, he says “and inheritance”. Could Paul be saying two things, that is:

  • Forgiveness of sins and
  • Inheritance

Now, to understand this, let’s observe the word “and” used in between “forgiveness of sins, and inheritance”. This word “and” which is the word “kai” in the Greek is a word which is not always used in a conjunctive sense (that is, as a conjunction), but sometimes it is rather used in an explanatory fashion. The context reveals when the word “and” is used as a conjunction or as an explanation of what preceded it, and when it is used as an explanation, that word “and” (“kai”) means “that is” or “which is” in Greek. In the context of Acts 26:18, the word “and” is used in an explanatory fashion. In other words, Paul was saying “that they may receive forgiveness of sins, which is an inheritance”. In other words, the term “and inheritance” was to further explain the forgiveness of sins. This means that Paul is saying that forgiveness of sins is an inheritance. So we see two things now:

  • Forgiveness of sins is received
  • This forgiveness of sins which is received is an inheritance.

So Paul says forgiveness of sins is an inheritance, an inheritance among who? Without much ado, the next statement answers this, he says “among them which are sanctified”. Who are them that are sanctified? Without any exegesis, those who are sanctified are the believers. No wonder Paul in speaking to believers has this to say in 1Corinthians 6:11, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the spirit of our God”. So believers have been:

  • Washed (cleansed from sin)
  • Sanctified
  • Justified

And notice this washing/cleansing from sin, sanctification and justification is by the Lord Jesus, which is by the Spirit of our God. So the term “and by the Spirit of our God” in 1Corinthians 6:11 was to further explain “the Lord Jesus”. So sanctification, justification and cleansing from sins were done by Christ or in Christ. So it could be implied that forgiveness of sins is not made available outside Christ. Who made/makes forgiveness of sins available? Jesus made forgiveness of sins available in His redemptive sacrifice (in His death, burial and resurrection). So forgiveness is in Christ, outside Christ a man’s sin cannot be forgiven. Hallelujah!!!

INSTRUCTION: Forgiveness is your inheritance in Christ. Acknowledge this.

PRAYER: Thank you Lord for your redemptive sacrifice wherewith my sins are forgiven eternally, in Jesus Name.  Amen.

QUOTE: What we have in Christ is not an account of sin; it is the forgiveness of sin.
